Had a club renter show up thinking BasicMed covered his student solo — nope; you still need a 3rd‑class until you’re at least a private, per FAA BasicMed rules: https://www.faa.gov/licenses_certificates/airmen_certification/basicmed. For the 1,000’ gate I arm a G3X callout and treat it like a railroad crossing — stabilized by the sign or you stop, i.e., go around. Small caveat: I nudge the gate to 1,200’ at night or when gusts are silly.

Echoing @jkeller202, I added “3rd‑class in hand = solo in hand” to our pre‑solo checklist and keep a copy in the dispatch binder so nobody tries to BasicMed a student flight. For the 1,000 ft gate, we brief a hard gate — stable by 1,000 IMC/500 VMC or go around; think of it as a speed bump for the ego. Small caveat: BasicMed later still caps you at ≤6 occupants, ≤6,000 lb, below 18,000 ft and 250 KIAS, so renters should check their typical aircraft.
